According to U.S. Flag Code, a flag is unservicable when it is no longer a fitting emblem for display due to severe tattering, fading or structural wear. Signs of damage Include:
Tears and Fraying: Rips, holes, or frayed ends (especially on the flying edge) that cannot be cleanly repaired.
Severe Fading: Bleached colors where the red looks pink and the blue union looks gray or white.
Stains and Soiling: Dirt, grease, or mildew that will not wash out.
Damaged Hardware: Ripped headers or warped, broken grommets that prevent safe hanging.
If your flag is unserviceable, do not throw it away! Drop it off at American Legion Post 184's flag disposal box where we collect and periodically destroy old flags at a respectful flag retirement ceremony. We accept flags at our drop box (see FAQ for accepting flags) at our Flag deposit box at 779 Center Street, Herndon, VA 20170. Google Map Pin or Apple Maps Pin
